Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi David Lau has welcomed Sunday's decision by the Ministerial Committee on Legislation to endorse a bill which provides that rabbinical courts can hear civil suits.
Speaking at a gathering of religious-court judges, Rabbi Lau called the bill "correct and proper." He explained, ''Many Jews seek to try cases by Torah law and it's unthinkable that they be prevented from doing so."
