French President Francois Hollande is visiting the northern port of Calais, Monday days after setting out his plans to close the Jungle migrant camp there and move migrants to reception centres across France. Between 7,000 and 10,000 migrants from Syria, Sudan and Eritrea live in the Jungle amid squalid conditions, many of them hoping to enter England illegally by hiding on trucks crossing the English Channel.

Mr Hollande will meet police, port officials, and politicians but is not expected to visit the camp itself. Work began last week on a kilometer (0.6 miles)-long wall  along the main road to the port in an attempt to deter would-be stowaways. It is due to be finished by the end of the year.
