Iran's official news agency, IRNA, has confirmed the execution of nuclear scientist Shahram Amiri.

Amiri was accused of providing "significant" information on Iran's nuclear program to US officials in 2010, in exchange for $5 million, though he later left the US without collecting his fee.

A spokesman for the Iranian judiciary, Gholamhosein Mohseni Ejehi, confirmed the execution of Amiri, claiming he "provided the enemy with vital information of the country."

Iranian officials originally believed Amiri's claim he had been abducted by US agents while on a pilgrimage to holy sites in Saudi Arabia, and had welcomed him home in 2010 as a hero.
