The Knesset approved overnight Monday the first reading of the law that would cancel the teaching of core subjects in state-funded haredi institutions.
37 MKs voted in favor of the bill and 33 opposed. Members of the Yisrael Beytenu party were absent from the vote after the Tourism Minister Yariv Levin, who heads the coalition team discussing matters related to religion and state, refused the party's request to discuss the law before the vote.
