A long-standing sovreignty battle between the Phillipines and China for a tiny island in the Pacific is heating up in the Hague.
4 years ago, China placed war ships around a 6-rock island it claims as its own, effectively blockading Filipino fisherman from access to the South China Sea Lagoon. Chinese ships will attack any Filipino boats in those waters.
Now, the Phillipines has filed a suit in the Hague, demanding free passage to their fishing grounds. Although they expect a victory in the world courth, China has announced that it will ignore the ruling.
Tensions continue to rise.
