Oscar Pistorius's sentencing hearing is beginning today, BBC reports. He could serve up to 15 years in jail, though the sentence may be reduced due to time already served.
Pistorius rose to fame and admiration for competing as an Olympic sprinter despite having no legs. His reputation quickly plummeted, though, after he fired a gun through a bathroom door and killed his girlfriend in February 2013. Pistorius insists that he though he was stopping an intruder.
He was originally found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to five years in prison, until the prosecution appealed and succeeded in increasing the charge to murder.
