The citizens of Switzerland have resoundingly rejected the proposed basic income in a national referendum, with 77% voting no.

Proponents of the move claimed that it would help the fight against poverty and the country's inequalities. Opponents, including the government, said that the project would cost too much.

According to the proposal, every Swiss citizen, regardless of whether or not they work, would receive 2,500 francs ($2,560 US) per month.
