The US Senate Armed Services Committee has approved a bill that would require women to sign up for Selective Service, starting in January 2018, Associated Press reports.
Senior officers in every branch of the military have expressed support for the bill. particularly now that the Pentagon has ordered all roles to accept women.
While few expect the United States to actively conscript citizens into the military in the near future, men are still required to register for the draft within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Those who do not can be denied a driver's license or student loans, and even face time in prison.
