The Italian parliament has voted in favor of recognizing homosexual couples in civil unions, as well as giving partial rights to unmarried heterosexual couples.
As the legislators were voting, activists expressed their support outside, holding a large banner with the message: "This is just the beginning."
Italy has now become the final major Western country to recognize gay marriage. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi promoted the bill in a challenge to the Catholic Church.
