Italy votes on legalizing gay civil unions

The Italian parliament will vote on legalizing gay civil unions today (Wednesday).

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi pushed for the vote, which is widely seen as a challenge to the highly-influential Catholic church, as well as to a number of his own party members.

Italy is currently the only major Western country that does not offer legal status to homosexual couples.
