Slovak customs agents opened fire Monday on suspected people smugglers during a car chase near the border with Hungary, wounding a Syrian woman, local officials said.

Police rounded up six suspected traffickers after the incident as well as 11 people believed to be refugees or migrants, including the injured woman. The customs officers gave chase after one of three cars with Hungarian and Romanian plates refused to stop at a roadblock near the southwestern town of Velky Meder.

"Customs officers fired warning shots but the vehicle refused to stop," customs service spokeswoman Patricia Macikova told AFP. "While shooting at the rear tyres, one passenger was injured," she added.
