Government to recognize gay, lesbian partners of fallen soldiers

Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon (Likud) has announced that the government will recognize gay and lesbian partners of fallen soldiers as bereaved families.

The decision came following a meeting with Ministry director Dan Harel and Aryeh Muelem, the head of the families and commemorative branch. During the talk, it was explained that there is no difference between recognizing bereaved single-sex partners and heterosexual partners, and thus there is no need to pass new legislation.

"We view single-sex bereaved families and heterosexual bereaved families the same," said Ya'alon. "We don't see why it wold be different, and it will not be different. We have a great moral obligation towards bereaved families, widows and orphans, and they will be all be recognized, whether it is a single-sex or heterosexual family."
