Lebanon held municipal elections in Beirut and the Bekaa Valley today (Sunday), Associated Press reports. Despite the increased security, voter turnout remained low.

This is the first time the country has held an election since 2010. Previous parliamentary elections were postponed due to security concerns over the civil war in Syria. Furthermore, President Michel Suleiman resigned in 2014, and the parliament still has not chosen a replacement.

The public has frequently expressed its disapproval for the government's conduct, particularly in continued protests over the past few months.
