The European Commission is pushing to impose fines on European countries that don't take in enough asylum seekers, the BBC reports.

According to the proposed reforms, the countries would be required to pay €250,000 ($290,000 US) for each person they turn away.

In order to pass, most European Union member states and MEPs would have to give their support.
