Last month, hackers stole $81 million from the central bank of Bangladesh. A British defense contractor has now explained to Reuters that they most likely did so by breaking into the SWIFT platform that is used around the world to transfer money.

The SWIFT cooperative acknowledged that it has been targeted by malware and a spokesperson said they would release both a warning and a software update today (Monday).

Should hackers succeed in compromising SWIFT, it could present a major threat to world banking and finance.
