US Secretary of State John Kerry recently landed in Baghdad for a surprise visit.

A spokesperson for the State Department stated that Kerry "will underscore our strong support for the Iraqi government as it addresses significant security, economic, and political challenges."

This is his first visit to the country in 18 months. While there, he will meet with Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, and Nechrivan Barzani, the prime minister of the regional Kurdish government.
