PayPal, the popular money transferring website, has announced that it is canceling its plans to set up a global operations center in the US state of North Carolina, BBC reports.
The about-face is in response to the state's recently-passed law requiring people at public facilities to use restrooms and locker rooms based on the gender listed on their birth certificate. The measure is viewed as an attack on transgender people.
"The new law perpetuates discrimination and it violates the values and principles that are at the core of PayPal's mission and culture," says PayPal CEO Dan Schulman.
PayPal says that the center would have provided $3.6 billion dollars to the local economy.
