French President Francois Hollande gave Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef with the Legion of Honor, the Saudi Press Agency reports.
The award, France's highest honor, was given in recognition of Prince Mohammed's "great efforts in the region and the world in countering extremism and fighting terrorism."
Associated Press reports that Prince Mohammed is also Saudi Arabia's Interior Minister and met with Hollande on Friday, though he was not initially intended to be so honored.
Saudi Arabia and France are allies with regards to the Syrian civil war and Saudi Arabia purchases large quantities of French weapons.
