The US state of Florida is reviewing its policy on the death penalty, following a Supreme Court ruling that the current system is unconstitutional, Associated Press reports.
Earlier today (Thursday), the state legislator approved a bill that would prevent the death penalty from being handed down if three or more of the 12 jurors objected. The previous law only required that a majority vote in favor.
While juries are only supposed to advise a judge on sentencing a defendant to death, the Supreme Court pointed out that the prior rules permitted the juries and judges to reach opposing conclusions on the issue.
The Court has ordered two executions to be delayed until the issue is resolved.
