An Egyptian appeal court has overturned the conviction for a police officer who was filmed killing a protester, Associated Press reports. The officer, Yassin Hatem Salah Eddin, had been sentenced to 15 years in prison on the charge of premeditated manslaughter.
Almost 900 protesters were killed during the 18 days leading up to the 2011 overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak. Although dozens of police officers have been taken to court for the deaths, most have either been acquitted or received suspended sentences.
Critics say that Egypt has resumed some of the notorious hallmarks of Mubarak's reign, including arbitrary arrests, torture, and causing people to disappear.
