Egyptian authorities have arrested a cartoonist on charges of operating a website without a license, according to the Interior Ministry. The cartoonist, Islam Gaweesh, has been known to criticize members of the government.
Gaweesh's supporters say that he was targeted as part of the government's efforts to silence activists and journalists. His lawyer informed Associated Press that Gaweesh was told that he is only being held on the charge of "publishing drawing that are offensive to the regime."
