Jewish Agency head Natan Sharansky spoke to reporters during a Limud event in Los Angeles today (Sunday). For part of his speech, he discussed the government's decision to allow non-Orthodox prayer groups at the Kotel.
"This is a historic agreement," he said. "There will be a very respectful joint entrance. The general section will be open 24/7 and not by appointment, as it has been. Even more importantly, it will be run independently."
Furthermore, Sharansky stated that this is not the final word on the struggle for the Kotel. "Sadly, this is not the end of the story. Nothing has changed as far as control over the central area. The struggle over the Kotel will always continue. What was important for us to achieve in the agreement is, first of all, an end to the violent, which would allow all Jews in the world to come and pray in the manner of their choosing, in the way with which they are comfortable, and in the manner in which they believe."
