The Iranian navy claims that it has warned a US warship against remaining in an area where Iran was holding a military drill, according to official Fars news. The US navy says that its actions were not affected by the drill.
The Islamic Republic's naval chief, Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, says that two warnings were sent before the US ship left the area. "They were warned once by maritime patrol aircraft and once again by the Alborz destroyer. The US warship left the region immediately after receiving the warning," he added, saying he believed that the Americans had approached the area to "learn our tactics."
The incident occurred near the Strait of Hormuz, which oversees the transport of 20 percent of the world's oil. It was Iran's first naval exercise since capturing 10 US sailors earlier this month.
