A Turkish court has sentenced a teacher to just under a year in prison for allegedly insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a 2014 political rally. The teacher was accused of making a rude gesture, Reuters reports.
Erdogan noticed the gesture during the rally and called out the teacher, calling her an example of opposition party CHP's rudeness. "Today as I was arriving (there was) a woman on a balcony," he said. "She made such an ugly gesture with her hand. There you go, that is the CHP. I mean the country's prime minister is passing by and you make that gesture with your hand and arm."
Turkish law forbids insulting public figures, and Erdogan is notorious for cracking down on what he considers to be negative references to himself.
The teacher was sentenced to 11 months and 20 days in jail.
