The Egyptian parliament met today (Sunday), for the first time since the country's 2013 military coup put President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in power.
The 596-seat legislature was chosen in extended elections from November to December, and is made up of a majority of Sisi supporters. The majority in the previous parliament, which a 2012 court ruling dissolved, was Islamists.
The legislature's first role will be to ratify the decrees Sisi has made since taking office. They number about 300 and the Egyptian constitution requires their ratification within 15 days of parliament's inauguration.
