Sweden has announced that it is instituting border controls for travelers entering from Denmark. The controls are aimed at limiting the number of refugees reaching Sweden.

As part of the changes, there will be no more direct trains from Denmark, and anyone who attempts to enter Sweden by any means of transport and does not have the necessary documents will be turned away.

The commute between Copenhagen and the Swedish cities of Malmo and Lund currently takes about 40 minutes and is used by about 20,000 people each day. The controls are expected to add an extra 30 minutes to the trip.

More than 150,000 people applied for asylum in Sweden last year.
