The German government says that it intends to require pilots to undergo random alcohol and drug tests, in the hopes of preventing future incidents like the Germanwings crash in March.

"I think it's sensible that pilots are checked on a random basis for the consumption of alcohol, drugs and medicines," Transportation Minister Alexander Dobrindt told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper. "Experts around the world see positive effects from this to boost operational safety in aviation."

The Germanwings incident involved a pilot who locked himself inside the cockpit, then intentionally crashed into the Alps. All 150 people on the plane were killed.
