US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power says that her country is committed to removing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from power.
"There is going to have to be a political transition, and Assad will have to go," she said.
The international community will meet in New York on Friday in order to discuss the situation in Syria. Power added that the various sides will discuss the "gaps" between their positions on what to do with Assad.
