German Chancellor Angela Merkel says that she will not accept the UK's demands for reforming the European Union, should it mean that they have to cut back on integration.

"On the one hand, we want to reach an agreement with the British government... on the other hand, we will not put the fundamental achievements of European integration in question, in particular, the principles of freedom of movement and non-discrimination of European citizens," Chancellor Merkel told parliament.

She added that "these principles are not up for debate."

UK Prime Minister David Cameron says that he intends to cut benefits for migrants to the EU.
