Sweden has announced that it will send support troops to Africa in order to allow the French forces currently there to fight against ISIS. The first stage will include a transport plane and logistical units to Mali, though the operation may be enlarged later.

Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom says that this move is an answer to France's request for help from other EU countries. She added that France did not directly ask Sweden for air support: "What they immediately... named was what is called 'back fill' - that is you add to support, mainly in Africa: the Central African Republic, Mali because it frees up soldiers and resources for them."

Though Sweden has taken part in peacekeeping missions, it has not fought in a war in over 200 years.
