A typhoon struck the central Philippines this morning (Tuesday), leaving four dead and millions without power. AFP reports that the deaths occurred in the Northern Samar province, three of which were caused by drowning and the fourth by flying debris.

Authorities are still unable to get in contact with some of the affected areas and fear that there may be more casualties.

The disaster hit shortly before the island nation began its traditional nine-day Christmas vigil. The period is very significant for the country, 80 percent of whose 100 million inhabitants are Catholic.
