The US has voiced its opposition to Hungary's plans to set up a statue of Balint Homan, a prominent anti-Semite who supported the Nazis and laws against Jews.
Ira Forman, the US's special envoy against anti-Semitism, told Reuters: "From the US government perspective we feel very strongly that history and the damage that this man did to Hungarian citizens who happened to be Jewish cannot be ignored, and to put up that statue seems incomprehensible."
The statue is being set up by the Balint Homan Foundation, which says that it wants to honor Homan for his role as a historian and minister of education and religion.
After World War Two ended, Homan was arrested and ultimately died in prison.
