Spain's Constitutional Court has rejected the Catalan Parliament's resolution to break away from the rest of the country. The motion, which Catalonia passed in November, calls for creating an independent republic within 18 months.

Catalonia is located in northeastern Spain and drives about 20 percent of Spain's economy.

Catalan leaders say that they will ignore the Constitutional Court's ruling.
