A senior commander in the internationally-recognized Libyan government was killed in an explosion today (Wednesday). AFP reports that Colonel Ali al-Thoman, the head of military operations, reportedly stepped on a mine in Benghazi.

The area around Benghazi, Libya's second-largest city, is largely under ISIS control.

The country has fallen into chaos since the 2011 uprising that led to the overthrow of dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
