The head of the Russian army's general staff spoke by phone Monday with the chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff to discuss issues relating to the fight against Islamic State in Syria.
According to the Interfax news agency, Russia's Defense Ministry said the call between Generals Valery Gerasimov and Joseph Dunford came at the initiative of the United States.
