Germany is preparing to deploy up to 1,200 troops to Syria in support of the international coalition combating Islamic State, officials said Monday.
That number would be an "upper limit" for the troops needed to operate the reconnaissance aircraft, tanker plans and warship Germany plans to send to the region, Defense Ministry spokesman Jens Flosdorff said.
