The Greek coast guard has rescued a total of 1,244 asylum seekers in the Aegean Sea over the past three days. This does not include the thousands of refugees who made it to shore on their own.

An official statement says that there have been 34 separate instances since Friday morning, most commonly near the island of Lesbos.

Greece is one of the most popular entry points for migrants to reach the European Union, many of whom are smuggled in by gangs in Turkey.
