The Vatican has announced it is investigating two Italian journalists over leaked documents demonstrating impropriety at the highest levels of the Catholic Church, Associated Press reports.

The journalists, Gianluigi Nuzzi and Emiliano Fittipaldi, both wrote books about Pope Francis's efforts to reform the Vatican that were published last week. The books were based on leaked documents from within the Church and show examples of extensive greed, waste, and mismanagement.

Fittipaldi told Espresso magazine that the understands the investigation as an inherent drawback that comes with properly doing his job.
