A Canadian from Toronto who was in a coalition battling ISIS in northeast Syria was killed by a suicide bomber Wednesday, fellow fighters and a monitor said.

"A Canadian fighter was martyred by a terrorist suicide bomber who detonated an explosives belt during fighting in Hasakeh" province, said Talal Ali Sello, spokesman for the US-backed Arab-Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces coalition.

Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, confirmed to AFP that a Canadian was killed in fighting near Al-Hol.

Late Friday, the SDF said it had launched its first operation against territory controlled by ISIS in the northeast.
