Noted Holocaust survivor and writer Thomas Toivi Blatt passed away Saturday at his home in Santa Barbara, California. He was 88.

One of the few Jews to survive a mass escape from the Sobibor concentration camp in 1943, Blatt went on to serve as a key witness in the trial against Nazi camp guard John Demjanjuk.

Polish-born Blatt lost both his parents and a younger brother to the gas chambers of Sobibor.
