Scientists have detected oxygen on a comet for the first time. Researchers with the European Space Agency (ESA) found oxygen among the gasses surrounding Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko has probably contained oxygen since it was first formed.

The Rosetta spacecraft is currently orbiting the comet and taking measurements.

"It is the most surprising discovery we have made so far, because oxygen was not among the molecules expected in a cometary coma," said a spokesperson.
