The Omani Foreign Minister, Yusuf bin Alawi, recently met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. In doing so, he became the first Arab foreign minister to meet with the Syrian president in four years.
Oman is trying to mediate between Syria and the Gulf states in order to find a solution to the ongoing Syrian civil war. Oman has previously served as an intermediary between the US and Iran on nuclear matters.
