Police in Peru have arrested an army lieutenant for allegedly taking bribes in exchange for letting traffickers smuggle drugs out of the country.
This is the first time a Peruvian officer has been arrested on drug trafficking charges in at least a decade, Associated Press reports.
The military has come under sharp criticism recently for not doing enough to stop smuggling. The country is one of the world's leading producers of cocaine, most of which is exported through the military-controlled VRAEM river valley.
