Henriette Reker has been elected mayor of Cologne, only a day after she was stabbed in the neck, AFP reports.

Fifty-eight-year-old Reker is an independent candidate, who has spoken in favor of Germany taking in more refugees. Her assailant said that he attacked her out of "anti-foreigner motives."

Reker had received strong support from Chancellor Angela Merkel, both before and after her wounding.
