The US government apologized for slamming Israel on Wednesday night. State Department Spokesperson John Kirby had tweeted that “We recognize that the status quo on Temple Mount was broken by Israel, which led to the wave of violence.”
An explanatory message issued on Thursday contradicted Kirby’s tweet. “I did not intend, in any way, to claim that the status quo on Temple Mount was violated. We applaud Israel and Jordan’s continued action to maintain the status quo.”
