A US appeals court has ruled against the NCAA's use of student athletes for profit. The court said that the organization violates antitrust laws, but also rejected a plan that would enable athletes to be paid up to $5,000.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the governing body for college and university sports throughout the United States. The case was brought by UCLA basketball player Ed O'Bannon and another 19 plaintiffs.

NCAA President Mark Emmert responded by saying that he agreed that "allowing students to be paid cash compensation of up to $5,000 per year was erroneous."
