Customs officials in Madagascar have discovered smugglers trying to take almost 800 rare tortoises out of the country. This is the largest single incident ever recorded.
The tortoises, all of which are listed as critically endangered, were found in an unaccompanied freight shipment that was destined for Malaysia. They had been hidden in socks and diapers, and covered with clothes.
Authorities believe that they were intended to be raised for either pets or food.
