The FBI in the United States has announced that it will start collecting and publishing more information about civilians shot by police officers.

"We hope this information will become part of a balanced dialogue in communities and in the media — a dialogue that will help to dispel misperceptions, foster accountability and promote transparency in how law enforcement personnel relate to the communities they serve," said Director James Comey.

The organization already keeps track of officers who are killed in the line of duty and the number of instances determined to be justifiable homicides by police. However local police departments are not required to provide data, and all the figures come from volunteered information.
