Oz, the Sumatran tiger that killed a zookeeper in New Zealand, will not be put down, AFP reports. An investigation found that the incident was "in line with his natural instincts."
"This is our call, and the decision on Oz rested solely with us. Oz is a significant animal for his species. He is the father of our two cubs, and he is vital to the ongoing breeding programme to conserve this rare species," the Hamilton Council stated.
Israeli-born Oz lives in the Hamilton Zoo, the third most-popular zoo in New Zealand. Sumatran tigers are native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, and are listed as critically endangered.
