The Mexican government is demanding that Egypt pay compensation after the latter's security forces killed eight tourists by mistake, AFP reports.

A foreign ministry statement read, "The Mexican government demands the necessary guarantees so that the victims of the tragic and regrettable attack perpetrated on September 13, all of them innocent civilians and their families, receive full reparations for the damage, including compensation." The amount of money expected was not specified.

Egypt claims that the tourists entered a forbidden area while security forces were pursuing jihadists, and that the deaths were an accident. However, the head of the tour guide union in Egypt claims that the group had permits for the location and were traveling with a police escort.
